We are kindred spirits of the mind. I volunteered in animal rescue for years, have had rescue dogs forever, and would have more than my two girls if I could afford it.

I do love living in the middle of the metro area, in a small, older part of town. What attracts me is the anonymity having grown up in a small town where everyone knew your business. (So, similar reasons for where we live.)

I don't follow fashion trends, try to buy minimally, and love thrifting. I donate to thrift stores rather than toss, and do the whole recycle thing as well. My goal is to reduce rather than recycle.

I work three lunch shifts a week at my son's restaurant, and instead of bringing my meal home in to-go containers, I bring my own containers every day.

I also refuse to use chemicals on my lawn and am working at eliminating grass in favor of gardens and clover. (Not hugely successful yet, but the heat here hasn't been my friend.)

Great article, Kelly!
