Eighth Grade Graduation L to R Becky, Author (Author’s Collection)

My oldest was Becky. She died eight years ago and it was the last time in 60 years that she didn’t sing happy birthday on October 20th.

As kids, it was in person, later she’d sing over the phone and later still, she’d leave a happy tune on voicemail.

When she died in March of 2015, it was a sad day when 35 days after my birthday, I was unable to call and sing happy birthday to her. (I sang a rousing rendition in the shower, though!)

Author’s Collection: L to R Doris, Author, Becky

Becky and I met when my family moved two houses down from hers in the wilderness of unincorporated Lake County. We were summer besties and besides swimming, we ice skated, played ball, rode bikes, walked to the store, took ballet, and when she got her Winchester .22 lever action rifle for her birthday one year I turned green with envy!
