Songs About Love
These love songs bring me to tears.
It wasn’t just any love, it was my first love. Manny, the golden god, moved onto the lake at the end of school. Maybe it was the mystery of a boy of color. Maybe it was the mystery of a boy that wasn’t like a brother. All the boys that summer were lake rats like me. We’d been buds since we were five.
Manny was something else entirely! We were inseparable, stuck like glue, my first boyfriend, my first kiss, and I had to go to band camp in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Then a Bobby Hyland song, Sealed with a Kiss, was released and, well, I’m not sure how I made it through a full week of band camp.
When this song came on the radio, in the weeks before I left, I would cry and cry. It was our song for the first part of the summer. Young love thrives in torment, eh?
But today, that’s not the song that brings me to tears. Nope, now I have a totally different take on what constitutes a song about love.
