My Tux, Gypsy, did that as well. I never fully broke her of it. She had been a stray and wouldn't go inside an enclosed cube. You know those carpeted cat things with a little hidey hole in them? Nope!

But, maybe Custard would fare well with a covered litter box. I never tried it because I knew Gyps wouldn't even consider it.
