There were ever only the two of us, 3 1/2 years apart. I was the baby she my big sister. One might think she would have been my protector but I have no memory of grand rescues.

Big sisters are supposed to torment, right? Other than the time she and her friend Linda jumped into our parent’s car and slammed the door as quickly as possible in an attempt to keep me out, thus slamming it on my hand, I remember no torment. Maybe she learned a lesson?

If anything those roles were reversed. I was a tomboy and she a girly girl all afraid of snakes and bugs … gag me! Of course that meant I would bring her every garter snake that crawled through our yard!

She liked boys many years before I did … Perfect fodder for tormentation. (I know it’s not a word but it should be and I just added it to my dictionary.)

She acted the girl, I the troublemaker.

  • She swam out to the raft to sunbathe.
  • I did cannonballs to get her wet.
  • She was helpful around the house.
  • Not me.
  • Her room was immaculate.
  • Mine a jumble.
