I've been doing words for the year for over a decade. I believe the practice started at Unity churches, but I could be wrong. That's where I first learned about it. They have something called the White Stone Ceremony. The minister does a meditation and then there's a period of quiet during which you allow Spirit to provide your word for the year.

I try to wait for that ceremony to uncover what my word is 'supposed' to be. I often go in with a preconceived idea, but am often surprised (sometimes not happily) with what the Universe thinks I should have.
