If I Could Turn Back Time
This topic pulled me up short. I thought I knew what I was going to write, but the subconscious had a different plan.
My father was an artist. If my recollection is accurate, he went to a trade school for graphic arts or illustration instead of a traditional high school. He would have started high school in 1935 or 36. (Having checked with my aunt, he went to Lane Technical High School in Chicago.)
I’m not sure if he was a cool kid or not. He was an artist, and sensitive, but would probably have figured out how to survive the bullies prevalent in the early 20th century by then. My sister remembers him saying he and his younger brother, our Uncle Dick, had a lot of freedom.
Gosh, this was my prompt and I don’t know what to write.
I would love to meet my dad as a young man. He was handsome and funny and Uber creative when I knew him. Was that how he was in high school? I can’t find pictures of him in high school, nothing. I have a picture of him skinny and his army uniform so just not long after high school.
My paternal grandmother was a crotchety old woman who died when I was twelve. I don’t remember her reminiscing about her boys’ childhoods and if she had it…
