Finally! Get Traction Toward Writing Every Day by Creating a Split Writing Routine

If you’re anything like me you have to stop writing on some, or most days to go to work, cook dinner, walk the dogs, or spend time with loved ones. I often found it challenging to bring my attention back to the point of my article.

As this happened more and more regularly I began to feel like a failure. I’d read tons of articles on how to form a daily writing habit, and I even teach a class on starting a journaling habit, but I failed over and over again at writing for Medium regularly.

One article outlined James Clear’s method of building a habit. I’d already read that book, and understood the theory, for heaven’s sake, I’m a Certified Habit Coach!!

  1. Cue: Make it obvious
    I put a note on top of the coffeemaker so I wouldn’t forget to write
  2. Craving: Make it attractive
    I made a list of why I wanted to write so I’d feel inspired. I wrote it on the front page of my notebook.
  3. Response: Make it easy
    I started every day by writing the day, date, and time, in longhand across the top of the page. Something about starting the ink flow unblocked my resistance to that blank…
