How Do You Choose the Most Important Constant in Your Life?
And, what the heck does it mean?
The Oxford Dictionary defines constant as a situation or state of affairs that does not change. Is there such a thing? Whenever I’m asked what is my favorite music, author, or saying, I am incapable of giving an answer.
At that moment my favorite music might be Måneskin but later that evening it could be Barbra Streisand. Several years ago my favorite author was Lillian Hellmann, but ask today and it might be Louise Penny. You see, it all changes, doesn’t it?
There are so many people or things that I could choose from if the question was to name an important constant in my life. It could have been my mom or dad. At one time or another, they were constants, but they’re both gone.
The Cowboy was a constant for sure, and there’s a constancy to my love for him that lingers even after twenty years without him, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s dead.
My mother taught me to stand up for myself and that’s remained constant even though I rarely have need of it anymore.
My dad taught me that a good heart can come through in the end, despite the appearance of never-ending addiction, which gives me hope for my daughter’s…
